Project Uganda
During a trip to see the mountain gorillas, I visited an orphanage in Uganda. The facility is located in a rural area and keeps several farm animals, including goats and a cow, which appear to be well cared for.
I was struck by the frequent offering of eggs prepared in various ways as part of the daily diet. Despite the importance of eggs, very few chickens were visible. When I inquired, I was told that chickens are expensive to buy and keep. Reasons for this include the cost of feed, their susceptibility to disease, and the risk of losses due to predators.
These observations highlight that animal products—especially eggs—represent an important, but not readily available, source of protein in this region. At the same time, it appears that raising goats and cattle is simpler and more economical under the given conditions.
Since 2023, the orphanage has been supporting the keeping of chickens. Funding covers both the purchase of the animals and the ongoing costs for feed and necessary medication. The project is very successful; all invoices are submitted regularly and on time.
The chicken coop was built by the orphanage staff and young people themselves, using locally sourced wood. This not only saved money but also provided practical skills.
Numerous photos documenting the construction and ongoing operation of the coop showcasing both the animals and the children and young people involved.
Since the project’s inception, animal husbandry—especially chicken farming—has been integrated into the curriculum of the affiliated school. There, the children learn the basics of care, feeding, hygiene, and sustainable agriculture. The project thus contributes to both food security and the children’s practical education.
